Big change ahead of the new season

The FA have announced that clubs will be allowed to make a 4th substitution in extra time of FA Cup games from next season.

The announcement follows the news that the quarter final stage will become a sudden death round from next year, so the rule will only apply to teams playing in the quarters, semi finals, and final.

The FA website states:

The FA will play a lead role in testing to introduce this innovation for the closing stages of this season’s Cup.

This would mean clubs who have used three substitutes from the seven players named on their bench during the sixth round, semi-finals and Final will then be allowed to introduce a fourth player in extra time

With The Cup now adopting a straight knockout format from the quarter finals onwards, the introduction of a fourth substitute in extra time will bring extra intrigue and interest.”

The Football Association are trialing the system which was used in this summer’s Copa America.
