Hodgson’s future as England boss will be decided this summer

FA chairman Greg Dyke believes Roy Hodgson can guide England to Euro 2016 glory, after talks of a new deal were postponed until the Three Lions’ tournament concludes.

There has been much speculation about the 68-year-old’s future, with the former Fulham boss having had a miserable World Cup campaign in Brazil, two years ago.

But Dyke believes Hodgson has what it takes to guide his talented young players to the final and lift the trophy for the first time in England’s history.

“Our position is straightforward. Roy had a contract and when the tournament is over a decision will be made.” said Dyke.

“Now I think Roy is doing a great job, we’re very supportive of him and I personally have always been very supportive of him.

“I think he’s a really good bloke and I believe we will go on and do really well in this tournament and he will get a new contract.

“I think we can win the tournament. I think we have played quite well. What we need to do is start meeting some teams that are a bit more attacking as that gives us some room.”

FA chief executive Martin Glenn and technical director Dan Ashworth will make the final call on Hodgson’s reign as Three Lions boss, with Dyke set to leave the FA.

It had been suggested last week, by the FA chairman, that Hodgson may have to reach the semi-finals to secure his Wembley hot set. But now the England boss has the added pressure of being tipped for the tournament glory, having just picked up one win in Group B.

England face Iceland on Monday, after their opponents finished second in Group F, above Portugal in third. Portugal were just moments away from facing England, before Iceland scored a late goal in their game against Austria to alter the tie.
