It was two mistakes that led to both of the home sides goals, first Mario Gomez pounced on Fazio’s mistake and finished well underneath the body of Hugo Lloris.

Then it was Jan Vertonghen, his dithering in the area allowed Chelsea loanee Mohamed Salah to seal the tie.

After a 1-1 draw in the first leg, Spurs came to Florence knowing they had to score at least once, Soldado had the perfect chance to give the visitors the advantage but it went to waste.

Spurs began the game lively, and had an early penalty shout when Erikson was challenged by ex-Manchester City defender Stefan Savic. They kept on top throughout the first half and would have taken a huge step towards the next round if Soldado had finished his golden chance.

The striker was clean through after Erik Lamela played a wonderful ball when Spurs broke from a Fiorentina corner, but the Spaniard scuffed his attempted square ball to Chadli and the ‘keeper was able to gather the ball easily.

But after the break, the Italian side were much better, they are currently on a ten match unbeaten streak and took their chance to go ahead just nine minutes in to the second half.

When Federico Fazio lost possession on the halfway line, Milan Badelj thread the ball through to Mario Gomez who managed to hold the backtracking Fazio off and finish the chance well pastly the Spurs captain Lloris.

The home side were now well on top in the game and Spurs’ defence was soon split open again but Salah could only direct his shot straight at the ‘keeper.

Salah made no mistake with his second effort, Vertonghen hesitated and tried to shield the ball but Salah nipped straight round the Belgian and poked the ball home.

The in-form Harry Kane was brought on inside the last ten minutes and almost got one back, but Ben Davies who had squared the ball across to Kane, was flagged offside.

The defeat will come as a blow to Spurs who now face Chelsea in the League Cup final on Sunday.
