First bust-up? Fat chance, admits Rooney

A few days ago it was reported that Sir Alex Ferguson had told his star-man, Wayne Rooney, that if he wanted to keep his place in the starting line-up, he would have too watch his weight. It is reported that Sir Alex has looked into Wayne’s family tree and has looked into their weight trends. Wayne’s dad suffers from obesity and Sir Alex is worried that Rooney could go the same way if he’s not careful.

However it has today been reported that Wayne Rooney has spoken out about his spat with Ferguson, saying that it isn’t the first time they’ve had words about the striker’s fitness levels.

Rooney has said: ‘As a striker I need to work hard all the time. I need to be sharp, which means my fitness has to be right to play well. If it isn’t, it shows,’ he said in an extract of his new book ‘Wayne Rooney: My decade in the Premier League’ in the Mirror, who are serialising his latest autobiography.

‘It would probably be different if I were a full-back. I could hide a bit, make fewer runs into the opposition half and get away with it. As a centre-forward for Manchester United, there’s no place to hide. I’ve got to work as hard as I can, otherwise the manager will haul me off the pitch or drop me for the next game’

Wayne is currently injured for Manchester United after receiving a nasty gash on his leg against Fulham in the second game of the season. This will see him sidelined for at least a month.
