Former Arsenal star set to replace Arsene Wenger

Former Arsenal star Mikel Arteta has been primed to succeed Arsene Wenger as the manager at the Emirates.

The 35-year-old, who is currently the assistant coach for title favourites Manchester City, spent five years with Arsenal as a player, and is reportedly set to succeed Wenger, as the club aims to look at life beyond the 68-year-old, according to The Telegraph.

After his retirement, the Spanish midfielder was set to have been offered a role in coaching by Arsenal, but instead, decided to join the services of City and work under Guardiola. In effect, he also rejected an offer by Tottenham Hotspur, to join Mauricio Pochettino’s team of coaches.

Before joining Arsenal in 2011 and spending five years there, Arteta plied his trade for Everton from 2005-2011, racking up 162 appearances.

Under manager Pep Guardiola, he is currently the co-assistant coach of City, along with fellow co-assistants Brian Kidd and Domenec Torrent.
