The goalkeeper is currently on the lookout for a new club

Marco Amelia may be on his way back to the Premier League, with Sunderland offering him a trial, according to reports.

The shot-stopper may not have too much experience of top flight English football but he has years of experience from clubs across Europe and Sunderland could be ready to take a risk on him.

He was third-choice at Chelsea last summer before being released at the end of the season and he has since been on the lookout for a new side. Sunderland could very well be that club.

Although he didn’t feature for Chelsea, the fact that the Blues even brought him in shows that they must have seen something in him with his years of experience and if given gametime for Sunderland, he could impress.

Pickford likely to start

However, even if he does make the move to the Black Cats, it is likely to only be as a backup. With Vito Mannone out injured for several months, the club are in desperate need of depth in the goalkeeping area.

Jordan Pickford – who has not featured much in the Premier League yet but impressed immensely on loan at Preston last season – could be the starting goalkeeper in Mannone’s absence.

Amelia though could step in if needs be and he’ll be hoping to impress David Moyes on this trial in the hopes of securing himself a new deal, a new club and potentially some much-needed gametime.
