Ex-Chelsea captain Frank Lampard has this evening agreed to join New York City on a free transfer- and Atletico Madrid striker David Villa is set to join him.

The Chelsea legend and Spanish striker were both at Manchester City’s Carrington training complex to negotiate and finalise parts of their respective deals. They both met with Jason Kreis, the New York City head coach, as Lampard broke away from the England squad and his preparations for the World Cup in order to finsh the move.

Both deals have made a huge statement on City’s US franchise, which begins in the new MLS season kicking off next March. Lampard is understood to have accepted a deal worth significantly less than the ÂŁ150,000 he was on at Chelsea, however, the paypacket is expected to be boosted by bonuses. Lampard’s call to end his time at Chelsea signals the end of a magnificant 13 year career.

New York’s signing of Villa is also a massive signing, with the Spaniard helping Atletico to a massive La Liga win this season.
