The midfielder has been linked with a Premier League move
According to reports on Twitter, Manchester United are set to beat Chelsea to the signature of Benfica playmaker Nicolas Gaitan.
Louis van Gaal is set to bid £21 million for the attacking midfielder, who could be on his way to Old Trafford rather than Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window.
Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims that van Gaal will give the United board the go ahead to sign Gaitan, the Dutchman has claimed he is ‘ideal to help his team’.
He could join some fellow Argentine players in Manchester
A major pull factor for the Argentina international is that he could link up with fellow international teammates Marcos Rojo and Angel Di Maria if he moves to the Red Devils.
Both Di Maria and Gaitan share the same agent in Jorge Mendes, who may be looking to link up two of his clients. It is believed that United scouted Gaitan on several occasions last season.
The Portuguese media claim that it is basically a done deal, with the details to be announced after Benfica play in the Portuguese League Cup final on Friday.
Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira was rumoured to be in England earlier this week to negotiate a deal with United’s officials.
