Liverpool striker, Rickie Lambert, has revealed that he accepted an offer from Aston Villa, but he ran out of time to complete the deal.

The Villains came in on Transfer Deadline Day with a late bid for the striker, and the Englishman has admitted that he was ready to leave but the two clubs ran out of time to secure the deal.

The 33-year-old has struggled for game-time at Anfield since joining in the Summer from Southampton, and despite being a boyhood Reds fan, he has admitted that he was ready to leave the club.

‘I got a phone call from gaffer Brendan Rodgers at 4pm on deadline day saying Villa had come in,’ he said.

‘He said he didn’t want me to go but offered the chance if I wanted to play more football.

‘I spoke to my agent, to my wife, to Villa and it was touch and go.

‘We agreed everything but, in the end, there wasn’t enough time to make a decision in the space of four or five hours for the next two-and-a-half years.

‘I didn’t think it was right for me to leave six months into my Liverpool career. I didn’t want to go.

‘It was something I would have regretted if I had moved too early.’
