Defender insists team must improve, or risk losing 100% Premier League record

Branislav Ivanovic has warned his Chelsea team-mates that they must improve on recent performances if they are to collect any points against Liverpool on Sunday.

The Blues struggled to overcome Shrewsbury in the Capital One Cup (2-1) and then needed a late Eden Hazard penalty to defeat QPR and maintain their 100% Premier League record last weekend. However, the Premier League’s only undefeated side came from a goal down to draw 1-1 against Maribor in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night, when a win would have seen them qualify.

The last three performances have been a shadow of their recent form, which has largely been down to the scintillating form of striker Diego Costa, who has nine goals in eight Premier League appearances. But, with the forward injured Chelsea seem to have lost their cutting edge in the final third and Ivanovic has clearly recognised that there is a danger of them losing their 100% record on Sunday, “I think if we play against Liverpool as we played against Maribor, we know it is not possible (to get any points)”

“Of course this was a warning to the team and this is good”

Mourinho’s men go into the game knowing another win would keep momentum in the team ahead of Costa’s return, and would only circulate further stories that this Chelsea side may be the first side to equal Arsenal’s invincibles side of 2003/04, where they went the whole season unbeaten.
