The England and Stoke keeper is to undergo a scan after suffering suspected ankle ligament damage during the win against world champions Germany.

Rutland seemed hurt himself moments before conceding Germany’s opener on Saturday.

The 23-year-old Stoke player was visibly in tears as he was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by Fraser Forster just before half time.

Butland has suspected ankle ligament damage, and England boss Roy Hodgson confirmed he would be assessed, to fully understand the true nature of the injury.

“You can never say how bad these are because they need to be assessed,” he said.

“We hope it is not serious but we have to wait.”

Butland has been a pivotal part of the Stoke City side this season, and has made 4 caps for England so far. He replaced the injured Joe Hart as first-choice keeper on Saturday, though was expected to drop to the bench for Tuesday’s friendly with the Netherlands.

England came from two goals down to record an impressive win against the world Champions. Goals from Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Eric Dier ensured the victory
