Brendan Rodgers confirms young defender will be at Liverpool next season

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that young centre-back Joe Gomez won’t be sent out on loan for the 2015/2016 campaign.

The 18-year-old completed a transfer to Liverpool earlier this summer after agreeing to leave Championship side Charlton Athletic, and despite not having much first-team experience, Rodgers won’t be sending him out on loan.

Gomez has featured in both of Liverpool’s pre-season games so far and has put in solid displays in both games and after their latest 2-1 win against Brisbane Roar, Rodgers confirmed that the defender will be fighting for a first-team spot next season.

Rodgers Rules out Loan Move

“He will stay here and compete for a place,” Rodgers said.

It’s reported that Derby County were interested in landing the centre-back on a season-long loan, but that deal isn’t going to happen now.
Gomez will compete alongside Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren for a starting spot.
