Costa Rica and Levante goalkeeper Keylor Navas has now become of of the world’s most wanted shot-stopper, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid having been alerted to a £6.5mil release clause.
Navas was the hero for Costa Rica on Sunday in the penalty shootout against Greece, guiding them into the last 8 of the World Cup. After some wonderful performances at the tournament, tiny Spanish club Levante will struggle to keep hold of him, especially with the small release clause.
The goalkeeper’s stats don’t lie. In the entire WC qualifying campaign he conceded just 7 goals, and has only conceded 2 at the actual tournament so far. It is argued that he was the best goalkeeper in Spain last season, despite Thibaut Courtois bursting onto the scene. However, Navas did not have the same defensive protection at Levante that Courtois did at Atletico, leading critics to believe the Costa Rican has done the better job.
‘I have had a tough journey to get where I am but I’ve fought hard and now I’m reaping the rewards,’ Navas said, recalling how Spanish club Albacete plucked him from Costa Rica’s biggest side Saprissa in 2010.
