The Reds comfortably won 3-0 at Anfield tonight

Liverpool avenged their Capital One Cup final loss to Manchester City by defeating the Sky Blues on Merseyside tonight.

It was a poor performance for Manuel Pellegrini’s side and they found themselves 2-0 down at the half-time interval.

Adam Lallana opened the scoring before former City midfielder James Milner doubled the lead for Jurgen Klopp’s men with his seventh goal of the season.

And it was more Liverpool dominance in the second half, as Roberto Firmino secured the three points when he made it 3-0 to the hosts on 70 minutes.

The defeat for the Capital One Cup winners leaves them in fourth place, 10 points behind Premier League leaders Leicester City – albeit with a game in hand.

On there other hand, a satisfying victory for the Reds means they are just six points behind City in the final Champions League spot.

This campaign in England’s top flight continues to have some unbelievable twists and turns as we head into the final 10 games.

Match Reaction

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini speaking to BBC Sport: “It is difficult to have an excuse but I saw the team was not recovered from the last week. We played Champions League and then League Cup final and I saw team was not fresh and Liverpool played better.

“The last two days we work very light, just try to recover the players but from beginning they won all the balls and had a high pace – more pace than our team.

“We didn’t attack well and create chances and didn’t have fresh legs to play like we can.

“It seems like the Premier League continues being the same from the start and very close. We will continue fighting.”
