Jurgen Klopp has slammed Manchester United legend Gary Neville for his remark about Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius.

The Reds chief was angry with Neville’s views and comments about the 23-year-old keeper after some nervous displays recently.

Klopp says that he needs to protect his players and claims pundits like Neville have ‘forgotten’ how it feels to be criticised by former players and the press alike.

“My job is to protect the players as much as we can, but I can’t do that when they’re on the pitch,” he said ahead of Liverpool’s journey to Middlesbrough.

“I’m not surprised about it. In my first press conference, I spoke about English media, and the pundits, the former players, forgot completely how it felt when they get criticised.

“Especially the Neville brothers, the one who was a manager, he should know.

“He showed he struggled with the job to judge players so why do we let him talk about players on TV?

“He’s not interested in helping a Liverpool player.

“I don’t listen to them. Carra [Jamie Carragher] doesn’t speak too much about United players, and the Neville brothers don’t care much about Liverpool.

“Tell him I’m not on Twitter. If he wants me, Twitter doesn’t help.”

Gary Neville was sacked by La Liga side Valencia in March after just 28 matches.

The former England international returned to his position as a pundit for Sky Sports after a short but unsuccessful period in Spain.
