The Reds are currently well in the title race as things stand, with the strike duo of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge contributing a staggering 42 Premier League goals this season, but there is little depth behind them up front as former Celta Vigo fan Iago Aspas has failed to recreate the form he showed in La Liga – which could hand a second chance to Borini, who is currently enjoying a loan spell with Sunderland.

“Fabio has got games and scored some very important goals. He got the opportunity to play in a major final at Wembley. All that bodes well for the future,” Rodgers said, having paid £11m to bring the former Chelsea forward back to England after a hugely successful spell with Roma in his native Italy.

Meanwhile, playmaker Suso, who arrived at Anfield from Cadiz in 2010, is currently back in Spain with Almeria, and has had an impressive season – prompting Rodgers to admit that the 20-year-old could force his way into the first team reckoning next season.

“The likes of young Suso has had a terrific loan in Spain playing regular first team football. He will come back and come into the squad in the summer and then we will assess where he’s at,” said Rodgers.

Rodgers has moved to loan out a whole host of players this season, including Oussama Assaidi (Stoke), Tiago Ilori (Granada) and Jordon Ibe (Birmingham), and has reiterated that the loans deal will help the Reds in the long term, as all of these players will gain valuable experience away from Anfield.

“The loans have certainly been beneficial. There are different types of loans for different players. In particular for the young players it’s very important for them to gain that experience.”

“It’s good for us to put them into clubs who operate with a similar philosophy. That helps their development and hopefully brings them back ready to play pressurised football at a high level,” the Liverpool manager said.
