The winger has become a wanted man since Newcastle were relegated

Liverpool have registered an interest in Andros Townsend, according to reports.

The winger has become a wanted man since Newcastle were relegated, with several Premier League sides all keen to keep him in the top tier of English football.

The latest side to express an interest are Liverpool, with boss Jurgen Klopp hoping to add a winger to the squad over the course of this summer’s transfer window. He’s already taken a look at several other potential winger targets like Leroy Sane and Theo Walcott but has now moved his interest onto Townsend.

The 24-year old would not only be a cheaper option for the Reds but he is still at quite a young age and with continued regular gametime in the top flight, he could continue to improve and get better – he is a much better prospect compared to other targets in Jurgen Klopp’s eyes.

Release clause

However, they could face stiff competition to sign him. Southampton and Man City are just two more of several other clubs who have been linked with a move for the Englishman and they too are willing to do what it takes – and pay what it takes – to get their man.

That amount (of money) might not be a lot. The player reportedly has a ÂŁ10.5m release-clause in his contract, meaning that any team that matches that amount can trigger the clause and automatically is allowed to speak to the player to try and agree a move – the club doesn’t have much of a say if it is met, much to the dismay of Newcastle.

Newcastle are of course desperate to keep him and are set to offer him a new contract to ward off interest. They plan to drastically up his wages and offer him a longer and better contract in the hopes of keeping him at the club.

However, with the club now facing at least a year of Championship football and with several Premier League teams interested, he may decide that the prospect of more top tier football is too hard to turn down and leave the club.
