Liverpool in pursuit of Barcelona full-back Martin Montoya

Liverpool Managing director Ian Ayre flew to Spain yesterday to discuss the transfer. The Reds want to recruit the 22 yr old Montoya, in January rather than wait until next summer when he is out of contract.

Their success on signing the young defender will depend on whether Barcelona are prepared to accept a fee for him now rather than risk his value being set by an independent transfer tribunal at the end of the season.

Montoya has made only seven appearances for the Spanish giants this season but has grown frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities

Montoya’s ability to also play at right-back also raises doubts over Martin Kelly, who has played just 51 minutes this season as he seeks to recover his fitness after missing most of the last campaign with a tolling knee injury.

And not only that the former Spain under-21 international’s versatility has swayed Rodgers to pursue the player, with left-back Jose Enrique sidelined until February with a knee injury and on-loan Aly Cissokho failing to convince the Liverpool boss he is needed at the club.

The 22-year-old player and his agent both have admitted that he may ink a contract extension with Barcelona, but Liverpool are hoping a fee can be agreed to ensure he moves to Anfield.

However, the agreement is not yet closed as several European clubs are also in favor to sign Montoya
