Liverpool Sakho injury blow

Liverpool have been rocked by the news that Mamadou Sakho could be on the sidelines for six to eight weeks with knee ligament damage.

Frenchman Sakho suffered the injury in the game against Crystal Palace, and was due for further tests with a consultant today.

However, he faces being out until the busy Christmas period, which means he will miss the international break and the Capital One Cup clash with Southampton.

He will also out of the league game with leaders Manchester City.

Sakho left Anfield in a brace and crutches after having an initial scan yesterday, but Liverpool staff have ruled out the possibility of Sakho having anterior cruciate ligament injury, similar to those suffered by Joe Gomez and Danny Ings.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp spoke about how big a loss Sakho would be when he said after the 2-1 Palace loss: “I would prefer to lose 4-1 and keep him in the team.”

Dejan Lovren is expected to take Sakho’s place at the heart of the Reds defence, alongside Martin Skrtel.
