Jordan Henderson told Raheem Sterling: ‘It’s your turn next’

Jordan Henderson penned a new long-term deal with Liverpool and told Raheem Sterling: ‘It’s your turn next’.

Henderson, 24, recently signed a £100,000-per-week contract for five years with the Reds to put spirits back into the side after their shock defeat in the FA Cup semi-final against Aston Villa.

The England international also urged team-mate Sterling to sign a new contract with the Reds as well.

Sterling’s contact is due to expire in two years-time but doesn’t want to negotiate his contract with the club until the season has finished, which is playing on both staff and fans minds.

Henderson said: “He has just got to do whatever he thinks is best but, if I was giving him advice, I would say ‘this is Liverpool’.

“I think this is the best place for him, of course. But, at the end of the day, that decision is up to him.

“He is a fantastic player for us. I hope he stays here and develops with us. He will be a big part of what we are looking to do.” he added.

Liverpool missed out on a trophy send-off to captain Steven Gerrard with the Reds failing to reach the FA Cup Final and sit outside of the Champions League spots in the Premier League.

Henderson says he is delighted that he has sorted the future of his career out and now is focusing on winning trophies with the Reds.

He said: “I’m over the moon that it’s finally done.

“There has been talk about it for a while now. It’s brilliant news for me to commit my future to this football club.

“Now I really feel that it’s a good time for us to look forward to the future with the squad we’ve got, the manager, the size of the club and the fans we’ve got.

“I now really think that, over the next few years, we can challenge and start winning trophies.

“For me, Brendan Rodgers is a world-class manager. I have got to give a lot of thanks to him for helping and, hopefully, it will continue.” he continued.

Liverpool gaffer Brendan Rodgers said: “Jordan is a brilliant professional and his dedication to his career and football in general makes him a role model to all young players.

“He has faced adversity in his time at Liverpool, but his improvement, growth and development is entirely down to his own hunger, commitment and willingness to learn and be better.

“The fact he has made such a long-term commitment to Liverpool is a sign of his belief in what we are looking to do here.

“He joins Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge as players who have signed long-term contracts with us this season. With other renewals and further additions in the summer, will all be part of moving the club forward.” Rodgers finished.
