Liverpool FC are ready to step up their efforts to sign goalkeeper Michel Vorm from Swansea City.
The Dutchman has emerged as one of Brendan Rodgers’ top targets, as he looks to add competition and depth to his Reds squad.
Rodgers took Vorm to the Liberty Stadium when manager of Swansea in 2011, and has remained a big admirer despite moving to Anfield since.
Liverpool believe Vorm could be available for as little as £5m this summer, with Swansea reluctantly willing to cash in on one of their biggest earners.
Vorm, 30, is on around £35,000 per week at the Liberty, and has two years left on his current contract. New Swans boss Garry Monk is already believed to be eyeing Reading’s Alex McCarthy and out-of-contract Arsenal stopper Lukasz Fabianski as potential replacements.
With Champions League football back on the agenda at Anfield next season, Rodgers is keen to ensure his squad has cover in all areas. Liverpool played a total of 43 games in all competitions this season, but will play a minimum of 46 next term, with more if they progress in any of the three cup competitions they are involved in.
Vorm has endured an injury-hit couple of seasons at Swansea since Rodgers departed. He missed 12 league games last year with a persistent knee problem, but has returned to form in recent weeks and is in contention to start for Louis Van Gaal’s Holland at next month’s World Cup finals in Brazil.
Rodgers believes the former FC Utrecht man’s experience, reflexes and ability with the ball at his feet would make him the ideal addition.
