Premier League side rely on penalties to beat League Two opposition

Liverpool booked their place in the Capital One Cup Fourth Round after beating League Two side Carlisle United – but they had to rely on penalties.

The Reds went into the game knowing that they had to win and with pressure already mounting on Brendan Rodgers‘ head, his job could have been on the line had they lost tonight.

However, luckily for him, Liverpool did manage to scrape through 3-2 on penalties after it ended 1-1 in normal time and extra-time.

Match Summary

Danny Ings gave the hosts the lead in the first-half after heading home into an empty net. The former-Burnley man scoring his second goal at Anfield in the week.

The two sides however went in at half-time level after Derek Asamoah leveled things up for the League Two side after slotting under Adam Bogdan.

1-1 was how it stayed for the remainder of the night and it took penalties to separate the two sides.

Liverpool converted their first two, while Carlisle scored one and missed one.

However, Adam Lallana and Philippe Coutinho then missed back-to-back penalties to give the visitors hope.

Sadly for Carlisle, Bastien Hery‘s penalty was saved by Bogdan and Rodgers‘ men advanced to the next stage.

Liverpool will host AFC Bournemouth in the next round.
