Liverpool to swoop for Illarramendi

Brendan Rodgers has been after the midfielder for months

Asier Illarramendi, 25, has found first-team football hard to come of late and could leave the Bernabeu for £15million.

The former Real Sociedad player has been used a substitute 19 times out of the 28 games he has started for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season.

Rodgers has always been an admirer of the Spaniard and will renew his interest after Real deemed Illarramendi surplus to requirements, following their exit from the Champions League.

Arsenal are also thought to keen on the Spain Under-23 international as well David Moyes’ Sociedad but Illarramendi would prefer not to move back to his old club.

Sociedad sold Illarramendi back in 2013 for a fee of around £23million but the midfielder has struggled to hold down a regular place at Madrid.

He still has four years left on his current contract which keeps him at the Bernabeu until 2019 and the midfielder has expressed a wish to stay put.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side travel to Espanyol later this evening and the Italian will be hoping their city rivals will do them a favour when they take on league-leaders Barcelona.
