Germany manager Joachim Low has admitted that he urged World Cup winner Mario Gotze to ‘show that you are better than Lionel Messi’, shortly before he entered the game.

Substitute Gotze scored an improvised winner after 112 minutes, as he took the ball on his chest following Andre Schurlle’s pin-point ball, with Gotze controlling the ball before dinking a well taken volley past the diving Romero in the Argentine goal.

And Low has revealed his words of motivation to his World Cup winning midfielder.

“I said to Götze: ‘OK, show the world you are better than Messi and can decide the World Cup,’” said Löw. “I told him that. I always had a good feeling about Götze. Argentina were becoming more and more tired, but we had players who could make a difference. Götze is a miracle boy, a boy wonder. He can play any position up front. I know he’s always able to decide a match, and it was a great winner he scored. But in extra time we had the energy to move forward. We didn’t want to go to penalties. We wanted the game decided before then, and we put them under more pressure.”

The goal sealed the win and Germany hung onto claim a first World Cup since 1990, with captain Phillip Lahm lifting the trophy aloft in the Maracana, on a historic day for unified German football.

Man of the moment Gotze also stated his pride and joy after winning the greatest prize in football.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said Götze, whose chances had been so limited in recent weeks. “You score the goal and you don’t really know what’s happening. It hasn’t been a simple tournament, or year, for me and I owe a lot to my family and my girlfriend who always believed in me. But a dream became reality here.”
