The 23-year-old, who has just over 12 months remaining on his current deal, was set to be the subject of summer bids from Premier League giants Manchester United and Arsenal.

La Liga giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have also been keeping tabs on the midfielder’s availability for when the transfer window reopens.

However, Dortmund chief executive Hans-Joachim Watzke has put a spanner in the works after admitting he hopes to tie the Germany international down to a new deal before the World Cup this summer.

Watzke said: “Ilkay Gundogan is an important player of our squad we want to keep at our club.

“We have submitted a contract offer to Ilkay Gundogan and we are expecting to hear from him about it.

“And we are certainly not going to need to wait until the summer to see him reply.”
