Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has asked the press to give him time after an inconsistent start this season.

The Spaniard compared his current situation so Sir Alex Ferguson’s first couple of years as boss of Manchester United, while also admitting that the Scot is his ‘idol’.

However, Guardiola mistakenly claimed it took the now retired Ferguson 11 years to win his first league title, when it only took him seven.

“Ferguson, my idol, took 11 years to win the league. Liverpool, a historic club, has for many years without winning. Give me time guys,” said the former Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss.

“I hope they give me time to try. All coaches have struggled in English football, not only Pep.

“Of course, in the last month we have to accept that we are not doing well – I have no defence [for] this. In this world, when things are not going well, you have to accept criticism coming from the environment.

“But I hope you give me more time. We have not won in the last four home games and have only scored four goals.”
