Manchester United and Barcelona could be about to pull off one of the biggest swap deals in recent years, if reports in Spain and England are to be believed.
GolDiario and the Daily Star say that United are prepared to allow Anthony Martial to move to the Camp Nou, with Ivan Rakitic possibly moving in the opposite direction as part of the deal.
Martial has found opportunities under Jose Mourinho limited this season partly down to the development of Marcus Rashford, and will want to play regular football especially in a World Cup year.
With Neymar having left and Ousmane Dembele out for an uncertain amount of time, there could be a spot for the Frenchman alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez at Barcelona.
The 21 year-old has great talent and has shown enough to justify the hefty £36million fee United paid to Monaco to sign him two years ago, but at his age he doesn’t want to be sitting on the substitute’s bench.
Rakitic could be used as a makeweight in a potential deal say reports. The Croatian signed a new contract at Barcelona earlier in the year and is still a regular in their team, but some fans feel he could be upgraded on.
His all action and combative style would be perfectly suited to the Premier League and United could afford to increase his wages if he were to join. Mourinho is said to be a big fan of the player.
Whether the deal materialises is yet to be seen, but if Martial is still not playing by January then it wouldn’t be surprising if he did try and angle for a move away from Old Trafford.
