Manchester United beat Real Madrid to £5million wonderkid
According to reports in the Portuguese press today, Manchester United have beaten Real Madrid to the signing of 16 year-old striker Umaro Embalo from Benfica.
The Red Devils have supposedly been interested in Embalo for quite some time, and are understood to have now agreed a deal to sign him for a fee in the region of £5million.
Embalo, born in Bissau, Guinea is an exciting wing forward, and has scored 15 goals in 18 matches for Portugal’s Under-17 side. He played against United earlier this season in the UEFA Youth League.
Real Madrid had been to reported to have held a strong interest in the youngster, but it appears that United have won the race for his signature.
A left-footer, his style is said to be similar to that of former Madrid and Manchester United ace Angel Di Maria. Embalo cites the Argentine winger as his idol and would have grown up watching him play for Benfica.
Liverpool and Manchester City had also been linked to Embalo, but the Red Devils’ good relationship with the Portuguese champions looks to have played its part.
Should he make the move in January as expected, he would most likely go into United’s U-18 or U-23 squad with a view of progressing to the first team in the coming seasons.
