The defender has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford

Manchester United right-back Rafael Da Silva is close to a move to Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais, claim talkSPORT.com.

The Brazilian joined United in 2008 when him and his identical twin brother Fabio signed from Fluminese. He was a regular starter during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign following Gary Neville’s retirement.

However, since the appointment of Louis van Gaal, he has struggled to break into the first team. Centre-backs Phil Jones and Chris Smalling often played at full-back over Rafael, especially when he suffered the long-term injury of breaking his ribs playing for Under 21s.

The 25-year old’s last Premier League start was in October 2014 and that may be his last for the Red Devils. Van Gaal’s ÂŁ12.7 million signing of Torino right-back Matteo Darmian suggests Rafael is not part of the Dutchman’s plans.

French media claim the deal is all but confirmed

Rafael only has one year remaining on his current contract in the North West, meaning United will look to make money on him rather than let him go for a free this time next year.

French newspaper L’Equipe have stated that the defender has agreed personal terms and he will fly to Lyon to complete his medical on Monday.

He looks to be heading for France, despite interest from both Benfica and AS Roma.
