Diego Costa, Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and Santi Cazorla head the list of players left out of Spain’s European Squad this summer, causing confusion amongst fans.

Diego Costa has had a poor season for Chelsea, scoring just 12 Premier league goals for the club this season, and whose naturalisation for Spain ahead of his native Brazil was one of the biggest talking points ahead of the 2014 World Cup will miss out.

Juan Mata has had an indifferent campaign for Manchester United, playing in every single match- scoring 6 goals and making 5 assists for the club, who missed out on Champions League football this season. Due to the sheer scale of attacking talent seen in the Spain camp, he has missed out also.

Cazorla returned for the Gunner’s 4-0 win over Aston Villa, After missing much of the season sidelined by a knee injury- the injury most likely being the main reason of his absence from the provisional squad.

When questioned about these choices, Spain Boss Vicente del Bosque explained:”The Cazorla situation is very like Diego’s — he has been out five months, made a great effort to be ready, but we can’t have many doubts,”

“There is lot of competition, we can’t bring them all, we just bring those most useful,” he added.

25-man Spain squad: Casillas, De Gea, Sergio Rico, Sergio Ramos, Pique, Carvajal, Alba, Bartra, Azpilicueta, San Jose, Juanfran, Bruno, Busquets, Koke, Thiago, Iniesta, Isco, Silva, Pedro, Fabregas, Saul, Aduriz, Nolito, Morata and Lucas Vazquez
