The defender has today revealed that he was close to moving to Old Trafford under Moyes and Van Gaal

Mats Hummels has claimed that he was close to moving to Man United when they were managed by David Moyes and then Louis Van Gaal.

The defender, who spoke to the Daily Mail in an interview today, said that United were one of the teams closest to signing him.

The Germany star currently plies his trade in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, after completing a controversial move to the club from their rivals Borussia Dortmund.

Moyes was keen on deal

However, things might not have panned out that way if the Red Devils had completed a deal a few seasons ago.

He revealed that David Moyes had an interest in him back when he was in charge at Man United but no deal was done and then, even after the change of manager to Louis Van Gaal, they were still in hot pursuit of him.

In fact, Hummels claimed that Van Gaal was extremely close to doing business to bring the Germany man to England but no move every quite materialised.

Instead, as we now know, he moved to Bayern Munich, where he has continued to do well. The 27-year old has continued to impress in the Bayern backline with his tackling and strength in the air and he is consistently one of the club’s strongest players.

Man United fans will now be left wondering ‘What if?’ with the news of this deal that never quite happened.
