Owner has regrets getting into football

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has admitted he regrets buying the club and getting into football altogether, but is adamant he won’t sell up even if they are relegated this season.

Ashley is usually against speaking to the media, but the Magpies owner took part in a rare interview discussing Newcastle‘s woes and troubles with relegation looming.

Rafa Benitez has recently come in and taken over at St James’ Park with the club sitting 19th in the Premier League, and in the interview, Ashley admitted that despite having regrets about buying the club initially, he won’t sell up whatever the result this season.

Regrets

He said: “Do I regret getting into football? The answer is yes.

“I have had tonnes of fun in it but I haven’t been able to make the difference I wanted to in football like I have at Sports Direct.

“I wanted to help Newcastle, I wanted to make it better, that’s what I wanted to do. I haven’t seemed to have had that affect.

“Let’s hope Rafa can do the business and keep us up there.”

Staying Put

When asked if he’d remain even if the club got relegated, he replied: “I have no choice. They’ve got me, and I’ve got them. That is the way it is.”

Ashley has been at the club since 2007, overlooking one relegation and one promotion.
