Bosnian didn’t impress on his Chelsea debut

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has already been forced to defend new signing Asmir Begovic after his debut didn’t go to plan against New York Red Bulls.

The Blues lost 4-2 to the American side, despite them fielding a developmental side, including a 16-year-old high school student.

Goals from Loic Remy and Eden Hazard were not enough for the Premier League champions, who conceded four of their own.

However, after the game, Mourinho defended Begovic after a less-than-impressive debut since his move from Stoke City.

Mourinho Defends Goalkeepers

‘First of all I think he was tired, the same as Thibaut Courtois and when goalkeeper are very tired, co-ordination is low, agility doesn’t exist, speed reaction doesn’t exist,’ Mourinho said.

‘Courtois made a mistake in the first half on his feet; Begovic in the second half was not sharp in his reactions. So, for me it is a consequence of that. But he is fantastic goalkeeper, no problem.

‘I’m so happy to have him. Next game against Paris St Germain he will start and play the first-half so no problem. It’s just a process.’

Despite it being a pre-season friendly, many Chelsea fans were quick to criticise Begovic and call for Petr Cech to return.
