The Portuguese has vowed he will only leave Old Trafford on the club’s terms

Jose Mourinho has verbally committed his long-term future to Manchester United by insisting he will only leave Old Trafford when asked to by the club’s owners.

The 54-year-old signed a three-year deal at the club back in the summer, taking over from Louis van Gaal, and has an option to extend that by a further year.

United have shown great signs of promise in recent weeks and could add the FA Cup and Europa League to the League Cup title they acquired last month.

However, despite having finally got his United side into shape after a slow start to the campaign, the Portuguese has never managed a club for more than three years – despite enjoying a trophy-laden career.

But Mourinho has vowed he is “happy” at United, despite having cut a glum figure on numerous occasions when spotted leaving the Lowry Hotel where he has been living since taking the Old Trafford hot seat.

“I would like to [stay at Manchester United]. I said the same when I came back to Chelsea,” said Mourinho.

“When I was at Chelsea [his first spell] I wanted different things for my life.

“When I was in Italy [with Inter Milan], [I left] because Real Madrid knocked on my door three times and I always said that the Spanish league would be a motivation.

“And when I came back to Chelsea, I thought I was going to stay until they want.

“I gave my word, I say the same in relation to Manchester United with the plus that I’m really happy and I really enjoy working here.

“I give my word that I’m going to stay here until the owners and the board want me to stay here.”

United are currently three points off fourth-placed Liverpool, although Mourinho’s men boast a game in hand who head to Chelsea in the sixth round of the FA Cup on Monday evening.
