Valencia defender was close to joining Manchester United

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is interested in signing Nicolas Otamendia from Valencia, hijacking Manchester United’s proposed deal in the process.

The Argentinian centre-back has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer, as Louis Van Gaal continues to make changes within his squad, but it now looks like they face serious competition from Chelsea.

Chelsea Plot Hijack

According to reports in Spain, Mourinho has asked his agent Jorge Mendes, who is also Otamendi‘s agent, to get involved in the deal and persuade him to snub United for Chelsea.

Mourinho is in the market for a new centre-back as he prepares for life without John Terry at Stamford Bridge, and he sees Otamendi as the perfect replacement.

Whoever does end up signing the defender will have to cough up the money as the La Liga side want his release clause activated which stands at ÂŁ36million.

Mourinho is confident that Mendes could persuade the 27-year-old to choose The Blues over The Red Devils, especially after he was involved in getting Radamel Falcao to The Bridge.
