Reports emerge claiming Athetlic Bilbao are close to deal

Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal could be set for a return to La Liga with Athletic Bilbao close to finalising a deal for the Spaniard despite his impressive season last year.

The Spaniard was one of Arsenal‘s most consistent players last year and also kept Kieran Gibbs out of the starting XI for the majority of the campaign.

Return to Spain

However, according to reports, The Gunners have failed to convince him to sign a new deal after talks with his representatives, and a return to Spain could be on the cards.

Reports in Spain are claiming Bilbao have agreed a two-year deal with the defender, with an option to extend it to three years based on appearances.

The 29-year-old arrived at Arsenal from Malaga back in January 2013, and although last season was his best in a Gunners shirt, it could also be his last.

The Premier League side are currently out in Singapore for a pre-season tour, but according to reports, Monreal‘s move to Bilbao could be finalised over the next few days.

If Monreal does complete his move, it would leave Arsene Wenger with just one recognised left-back in the shape of Gibbs.
