Ex-United star reveals he was interested in Anfield move

Ex-Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic has admitted that he was interested in a move to Liverpool before Sir Alex Ferguson came in for him.

Vidic, 34, who is now retired after an unproductive spell at Inter Milan following his United exit, played for United between 2006 and 2014, winning every trophy he could’ve done during his time there.

‘Yes [it’s true]. Rafa Benitez called me and I nearly went there. I was interested in going, but my English wasn’t good and I was struggling to communicate,’ Vidic said.

‘Then Manchester United came. Fergie called me at my apartment and said: ‘I watched you play for Serbia against France – I want you here’.

United were decisive. Everything was done very quickly, within two days.’

The Serbian international would go on to make 300 club appearances, captaining the side from 2010.

Vidic was involved in several high-tempered meetings with Liverpool and was actually sent off against them on four occasions, including being given red cards in three consecutive meetings with the Reds.
