Newcastle have this morning made a bid of £8million for Lyon’s Clement Grenier.
But the club’s offer is set to be rejected by the French side as it falls around £5million short of the Ligue 1 side’s valuation.
The 23-year-old French midfielder has scored five goals in 24 appearances this season – and has three caps for France.
And he could be the ideal replacement for the Toon as they prepare for the departure of Yohan Cabaye.
Cabaye is expected to sign a three-and-a-half year deal at Paris Saint-Germain in a deal thought to be worth £23million to Newcastle.
Luuk de Jong is also expected to join Alan Pardew’s squad today from Borussia Moenchengladbach when he completes a medical later today.
