The Red Devils secured themselves a place in the fourth round with victory at Northampton.

Man United are back to winning ways after they claimed a 3-1 win over Northampton.

It wasn’t an easy trip for the Red Devils to make – especially on a Wednesday night and especially against a side who were desperate to cause an upset against a Premier League side – but in the end, they saw it off with relative ease.

It got off to a good start for the away side when Michael Carrick found the back of the net with a superb goal from outside the box, with just 17 minutes on the clock.

The Red Devils continued to pile on the pressure but it was Northampton who fired in the next goal. Daley Blind brought down Sam Hoskins in the box and Alex Revell sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the playing field again at half-time.

However, Jose Mourinho’s side came out determined to wrap the game up in the second half and threw everything they had at it. The home side had several chances to take a shock lead but it was ultimately United who next found the back of the net. Ander Herrera struck a powerful shot which flew into the net to put his side ahead.

That lead was then doubled seven minutes later by Marcus Rashford, who came on as a substitute. Goalkeeper Adam Smith couldn’t deal with a simple long clearance and the youngster made him pay, putting United 3-1 up and securing the Red Devil’s passage into the fourth round.

Next up for Man United? City rivals, Man City. It is sure to be another fiery affair.
