Wayne Rooney etched his name into the Manchester United record books once again last night, after becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer in Europe.

His goal in the Red Devils’ 4-0 Europa League victory over Feyenoord was his 39th in Europe, and saw him overtake Ruud van Nistelrooy.

After the game, praise was heaped on the England forward from United legends, notably Paul Scholes.

“Everybody inside this club knows how special he has been to score that amount of goals. It’s a fantastic achievement,” he said.

“He’s broke the European record and is close to Sir Bobby’s record.

“The people who have played with him and know him, know what a player he has been for this club.”

Rooney may well claim another record before Christmas, as he is now only one goal behind Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goals record for the club.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has proclaimed that he is ready to help Rooney in his quest.

The maverick Swede said: “I am happy he broke the record. But I will help him to go one more. That I see as the real record.

“We should appreciate him for the player he is, what he did. I don’t see many players from England who have had the same career as him.

“They should show more respect for him. Everybody wants to make a little thing a big thing.”
