Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has revealed how Newcastle United once tried to sign him.

The Gabon international has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent months, but with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United interested in him.

However, Aubameyang has revealed that the first club from England to be interested in him was in fact Newcastle.

The 26-year-old revealed the Magpies made an offer for him when he was up-and-coming at French side Saint-Etienne. Aubameyang spent two seasons there, netting 37 goals in 87 games before moving on to Dortmund.

Speaking about his career, the striker admitted that things could have been different had St-Etienne got their way, as they wanted to send him to St James’ Park.

Striker Talks Career

“I received an offer from Qatar of €10m per year. If I accepted, my family would be set up for life,” he told French Newspaper L’Equipe.

“We chose to stay at Saint Etienne, where I got €70k per month, knowing that, given my qualities, I could earn money tomorrow.

“The following season, Saint-Etienne wanted to send me to Newcastle.

“We opted for Dortmund, finalist in the Champions League, because my father studied Klopp’s game, even though the pay was lower.”
