Barclays Premier League Team Of  The Week

Who impressed during this weekend’s Premier League schedule. After yet another thrilling weekend of Premier League football which saw two teams officially relegated down to the Championship, sillyseason have put together their ‘Team of the Week’.

It was a sad weekend for both Burnley and Queens Park Rangers as they were relegated from the top-division after just a one year stay. Burnley were victorious over Hull City, but due to Newcastle United earning a point against West Bromwich Albion, their fate was settled.

As for QPR, they went down in a rather humiliating fashion as they were thumped 6-0 by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

sillyseason Team of the Week

So after all 20 teams were in action, which 11 players stood-out the most and which stars made it into sillyseason’s Team of the Week.  Find out below!

Goalkeeper – Lukasz Fabianski – Swansea City

The Pole returned to his former-club Arsenal on Monday night and put in a stunning display which saw him keep a clean-sheet during their shock 1-0 win. A total of nine saves were made by Fabianski, including a superb double-save to deny Alexis Sanchez and then Theo Walcott.

Centre-Back – Jores Okore – Aston Villa

With their survival all-but guaranteed now, Aston Villa picked up yet another massive three points at the weekend after beating West Ham United 1-0 at Villa Park. It was a solid display by the home team and due to their recent run under Tim Sherwood, another year in the Premier League looks certain. Okore was at the heart of the Villa back-line and put in a solid performance alongside Ron Vlaar.

Centre-Back – Ashley Williams – Swansea City

Despite going down injured early on, Williams carried on and played the whole match at the Emirates last night. He was a rock for Gary Monk’s side yet again and kept the threat of Arsenal’s attackers at bay. Another solid performance from the Welsh international.

Centre-Back – Aleksandar Kolarov – Manchester City

Now I know technically Kolarov isn’t a centre-back, but to go in our 3-5-2 formation, we’ve decided to turn him into one. He scored a superb free-kick against QPR on Sunday and put in a great shift in the back-line which helped keep a clean-sheet.

Right-Midfield – Ashley Young – Manchester United

Something has happened to Young since Louis Van Gaal’s arrival at Old Trafford and his performance against Crystal Palace has earned him a spot in the Team of the Week. Two assists in the 2-1 win shows how crucial he was to the side’s three points which guaranteed them Champions League football.

Centre-Midfield – David Silva – Manchester City

We could have picked anyone from Manchester City after their 6-0 thrashing of QPR, but Silva makes the team due to his two assists and overall play during the game. Superb performer for City this season and yet another stellar game for the Spaniard.

Centre-Midfield – Steven Gerrard – Liverpool

Ridiculed for the whole game due to his slip last season, Gerrard showed football fans what he’s all about at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. Brilliant performance from the veteran, scored the equaliser right on half-time and was then given a standing ovation by all corners of the ground.

Centre-Midfield – Jack Grealish – Aston Villa

Another player we’ve had to slightly move in order to get into the team, but Grealish was superb for Villa against West Ham and simply couldn’t miss out. What a talent this lad will be. Underused by Paul Lambert, the youngster is finally getting game-time under Sherwood and could be set for a massive season next year at Villa Park.

Left-Midfield – Riyad Mahrez – Leicester City

If you score a brace, you will usually make the Team of the Week. Two goals for Mahrez in Leicester’s massive 2-0 win over Southampton and it’s three points that somehow looks likely to keep The Foxes in the Premier League. Who would have thought that a few months ago?!

Striker – Sergio Aguero – Manchester City

How, HOW, did this guy not get into the PFA Team of the Year?! Yes he’s been injured a fair bit, but he’s still the top goalscorer in the Premier League! Aguero showed everyone what he can do when in the mood on Sunday by firing a hat-trick past Rob Green and also setting up another two. Phenomenal individual display from one of the best players in the world.

Striker – Danny Ings – Burnley

Was a tough pick this one, but we went for Ings. He’s had a superb season for Burnley and despite not being enough for the club, he will certainly be in the Premier League next year.

So what are your thoughts on the team? Have we missed anyone out?
