Carlo Ancelotti has been sacked as the manager of Spanish giants, Real Madrid after just two seasons in charge.

The 55-year-old led the Bernabeu club to a Spanish Cup title before winning the club’s 10th European Cup last campaign.

However, it hasn’t been as successful for Madrid this season as they were knocked out by Juventus in the Champions League semi-finals while Barcelona won La Liga.

The Italian’s side came second in Spain’s top league, two points behind champions Barca, who have been dominant in Spain this campaign, who have reached the Champions League and Spanish Cup final.

It was a difficult decision to sack the veteran manager, according to club president Florentino Perez, and confirmed that a new manager would be appointed within the next week.

Real beat rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 after extra time in the Champions League final in June 2014 to seal their 10th European title.

Ancelotti has three Champions League final victories to his name, with him winning it twice with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007 – but leaves Madrid after failing to win La Liga in his time at the club.

The former Paris St-Germain manager said in an interview on Monday that if he left Madrid, he would take a year out from management to have back surgery, he said: “I must have a back operation because of spinal stenosis that for some time creates a tingle in my hands.

“I don’t know how long the period of recovery will be.

“I can assure you that I’ve had plenty of offers from Italy, England, Germany. I’m sure they will not be lacking from here until next year.” he added.
