Revealed: The brutal run that could make or break Chelsea’s season

Chelsea were paired with Barcelona in today’s UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw. It’s a mouth-watering clash for the neutral, but one that Blues fans were probably hoping to avoid.

Having finished second to Roma in their group they were guaranteed a tie with either Barca, PSG or Besiktas and will eventually play against Messi and co in the new year.

The first leg will take place at Stamford Bridge on February 13th, with the return at the Camp Nou on March 6th. The two matches come either side of away trips to Manchester United and Manchester City in what will be a brutal four match run for Antonio Conte’s men.

Their schedule will look like this:

Feb 13 – Chelsea vs Barcelona
Feb 24 – Manchester United vs Chelsea
Mar 3 – Manchester City vs Chelsea
Mar 6 – Barcelona vs Chelsea

It’s worth noting that the Blues will also have A 5th round FA Cup tie on Feb 17/18 should they make it that far. The Carabao Cup final also takes place on February 25th.

Anything could happen between now and February, but given that they are 14 points behind leaders Manchester City it looks unlikely that the Blues will be able to catch up in the league.

However, these matches could still make or break their season and indeed Antonio Conte’s career at Stamford Bridge. Embarrassing defeats could be the final nail in the Italian’s coffin.

Chelsea and Barca have shared some classic encounters down the years, most recently in 2012 when the Blues defied the odds to come from 2-0 down to progress in the semi-finals.
