Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign AS Roma star Kevin Strootman as a partner for Paul Pogba in midfield.

United are keen to bolster their options in the midfield area in the summer transfer window, with rumours growing over the future of fan favourite Michael Carrick, who is coming to the end of his current deal at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have recently been linked with Tottenham Hotspur utility-man Eric Dier, but the new reports claim Mourinho could revisit the chance of signing the Netherlands international.

Strootman was rumoured heavily with a switch to United during Louis van Gaal’s spell in charge at the Theatre of Dreams, and looks a fitting replacement for Carrick.

Mourinho is a keen admirer of the 27-year-old Dutchman and wants to bring him to United, according to Sky Sport Italia.

The Portuguese gaffer spent big money in his first summer transfer window, bringing in Paul Pogba for a world-record £89million, but the France star has lacked a reliable partner in midfield.

According to reports, it is Strootman’s style of play alongside Pogba’s is something that appeals to Mourinho.
