Ron Vlaar: ‘We’re not a one-man team’

Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar believes the players showed on Saturday that they do not rely on star-striker Christian Benteke after they beat Mancheset City 3-2 at Villa Park.

Since his arrival last summer, Benteke has become one of the best strikers in the Premier League, and with that tag, many people have suggested that Villa will only do well, if the Belgium is scoring.

So when the 22-year-old picked up an injury away at Norwich City last weekend, everyone started doubting Villa and thought they would be in big trouble.

However, they went on to beat Norwich 1-0 that day and then beat City on Saturday 3-2 and Vlaar believes the players are proving that they don’t just rely on the striker.

“We kept on going. The spirit was really good, we put a lot of energy into it and came back two times from a goal behind,” said Vlaar.

“It was unbelievable, it was really good.

“Everybody knows how important Christian is for the team. But we showed against Man City we have more to offer and I think we can really be proud of ourselves.”
