Wayne Rooney mades his return from injury last night, playing for Manchester United U21s against Middlesbrough.

The Manchester United and England captain has been out since February, missing 12 games with a knee problem, but managed 61 minutes as the home side ran out 1-0 winners thanks to Paddy McNair’s goal.

Rooney had a quiet match, his highlight in front of a 6,132 crowd being a second-half free-kick that curled narrowly over the crossbar.

As of late, United are short on options, even with Anthony Martial fit and firing, and the return of Rooney will be welcomed, even by his detractors.

Louis Van Gaal witnessed the 1-0 win for the U21s, and he will certainly hope that he can step up and make an impact for the rest of the season, as the Red Devils continue their bid to get Champions League Football next season.

Van Gaal said Rooney, 30, could play in the upcoming FA cup tie against West Ham United should he prove his fitness.
