Ross Barkley wins most pointless Panenka award

Why do it when game is done?!

Before we get into this rant, lets just get one thing straight. Ross Barkley is a talent, a real English gem, but his Panenka last night was one of the most pointless things that has happened on a football field.

People are praising it and saying it took incredible nerve to do such a thing and how it shows just how gifted and talented he really is.

No it doesn’t. It shows none of the above.

Yes Barkley is a talent, we all know that anyway, but scoring a Panenka penalty in stoppage time when you are already 2-0 up against a 10-man Newcastle United doesn’t exude confidence and ability to me.

Lets take you back to 2014, and once again it was a Panenka against Newcastle.

Santi Cazorla of Arsenal did the exact same thing in the 88th minute when the Gunners were already 3-1 up.

He scored the chipped penalty and once again the majority of people praised him and called it ‘tekkers’ etc.

However, a former-professional by the name of Carlo Cudicini saw it in a different light. A correct light so to speak.

After Cazorla did the penalty, the ex-goalkeeper tweeted: “Well done Cazorla, 88th minute 3-1…very brave!! Would love to see it in a penalty that count. #notimpressed”

These are my exact feelings towards Ross Barkley‘s penalty. Well done mate, you’ve scored a Panenka when you’re 2-0 up against 10-men with seconds left to go. Real brave. Take a bow.

Zinedine Zidane did a Panenka in the World Cup FINAL! Andrea Pirlo did it in a European Championship penalty shoot-out, now that takes b***s. Not what Barkley did.

‘It Shows Confidence’….Does it?

After the game, Roberto Martinez praised Barkley for the penalty. He said, and I quote: “The second penalty shows he is a confident young man with incredible technical ability.”

Pure nonsense. Lets see him do it in the summer’s Euros and then we can credit him ‘confidence and ability.’

Lets go back to the start, not questioning Barkley as a player, his talent is unquestioned, but no-one should be praising him for a Panenka attempt in stoppage time.
