The left-back opens up about his former Chelsea teammate

Southampton defender Ryan Bertrand has insisted that Kevin De Bruyne never got a fair chance to showcase his talents during their time together at Chelsea.

Bertrand admitted that the Belgium international impressed him in the training sessions they participated in together, but also believes he wasn’t given the first team exposure he needed at the Blues.

De Bruyne moved to Stamford Bridge in 2012, but after just three Premier League appearances he left for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in January 2014.

Since then the 24-year old has returned to England’s top flight, after his scintillating form in Germany earned him an approximate ÂŁ55 million move to Manchester City.

Now De Bruyne is showing Chelsea what they could have had and it’s very much a case of ‘I told you so’ for Bertrand.

‘he always had it’

“If you have trained with him like I have, you would know he always had that end product everyone is talking about today. Kevin has that ability to provide assists and score goals and he’s now showing that on the biggest stage,” said Bertrand.

“It’s so easy for everyone to say how much he has improved since leaving Chelsea, but the truth is he always had it. He just, for whatever reason, was not given the opportunity to show it at Chelsea,” added the England international full-back.
