The Dutch forward looked likely to sign for Arsenal this summer before boss Arsene Wenger was alerted about the availability of Danny Welbeck.

Huntelaar has less than 12 months left on his current Schalke contract and the club management are keen not to lose him.

The 31 year-old has an incredible list of clubs on his CV such as Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan however he still yet to decide whether he sticks with the Bundesliga outfit.

Huntelaar has had a successful spell during his time with Schalke, netting 92 times in 140 appearances since his move back in 2010.

As much as Arsene Wenger, Brenden Rodgers and Mauricio Pochettino will be interested, the German club are keen to keep hold of their star man.

Club director Horst Heldt earlier revealed: “There was no summer approach from Arsenal or from any other club.

“Klaas-Jan is part of Schalke’s core. We can definitely see him signing a contract renewal here.

“He is a great player, an absolute modern professional. He’s always hungry for success and wants to achieve his goals.”
